While listening to the podcast Finding Strength… it became clear to me you’ve learnt a hard lesson about self-preservation and boundaries. I hope you’re aware of Laura Tingle’s recent remark about Australia being a racist country and that it may have somehow bought you some solace.
Ah, thanks Frances. It’s funny, I almost never listen back to the interviews I do so I don’t remember much of what I said but I hope it was an interesting listen…
Hi Yassmin, very sorry to read about your uncle. I'm trying to educate myself about Sudan - are there any books you'd recommend starting with? I'm particularly interested in the legacy of colonial rule.
Hi dear friend. I am mingling tears with love. We are all standing witness to this and I'm deeply cognisant of how easy some people might be breathing today but just how deeply hard it is for others to wake up without respite.
As I write this I find myself thinking of mum as we are heading to the anniversary of the last two weeks of her life. When we took turns to sit by her bed.
I am struck by the fact that so many people in the Sudanese & Palestinian diaspora are doing the equivalent of carer roles & mourner but at a physical remove. Your hand stretches out to find air in the place of bodies in a land where cries echo in the tube tunnel or on a bus.
Oh my dear friend. 💔🙏
Thank you for sharing.
I'm so so excited for all your projects and I personally know how hard it is to create when your mouth is full of ashes.
My prayer today is of gratitude for the work you're doing as a judge on literature; the things you've shared here (I'm only on one group chat - musos of wayside & I'm about to yell at its group leader🤷🏼).
If others are reading this: medicin San frontiers are on the ground in Sudan and you can become a monthly supporter of
the Darfur Women's association.
I've probably mistitled that.
May the G-d of this universe uphold us all in love.
Ah. Thank you for sharing this. So much to say and yet only one thing to say.
Thank you 💙

On the Tingle comment - validating, though I wish it would mean some change - on whether that will follow I am less confident
Yes, turbulent times and—as you, yourself describe in this post—many feeling powerless to create change.
