Ah Yassmin. First. What an amazing thought. How do we survive victory? It made me think of our failed referendum. One reason (among many), I believe was the media amplifying voices saying: "but what will this Voice look like? " in the lack of clarity, or perhaps the inability to appear confident in the face of their own unconscious biases, a vacuum created was filled with the worst kind of fearmongering. The voice never got to even survive victory, but I think it comes from that same idea.
Thank you for giving us clarity and the opportunity to amplify the need to keep our eyes on Sudan. I wish it didn't come at the expense of yours and others health. This Xmas Palestinian Christians and many Christians around the world are exhausted - how can we celebrate the birth of Jesus while the world s burning, literally. How can we celebrate under empire. How donwe speak out! Yesterday, I spoke at Wayside about unexpected joy breaking in despite living in tragic times. As i was preparing the talks for the sunday services, my partner Jo, who has a diagnosis of bi polar, became overwhelmed by the terminal diagnosis of her father, my mother's fall, her subsequent palliation & finally passing. Jo kept pushing on & has become severely unwell, & is now in hospital with full blown mania. Its been hard. I'm now concentrating on taking time to care for myself. Like you, I have had to become aware of my limits, and withdraw from social media, only checking in to send messages of love and support to those fighting to amplify voices.
During tragic times it can feel like the world stops spinning & we are isolated from everyone. Yet moments of joy creep in, unexpectedly- or expectantly in the case of Dr Who! Though I resent having to subscribe to Disney to watch it! I won't write my talk out here - but I will say that even when it's just all feels like a burning heap- your writing keeps me going. It makes me want to keep fighting for justice. It keeps me excited too, for books and films I hadn't heard of. Without your mention of Doornoch, for example, I would never have known about a brilliant Australian comedy thriller! We got a months free subscription just to watch it and laughed!
My great nephews are getting "Stand up, Speak out against Racism" for Xmas. It's my hope that they too will one day march and protest and agitate despite the cost of victory. Thank you for this brilliant resource.
I wish you all the best over this break. See you on the other side. I hope you get some snow somewhere, and will share in the joy of Ncuti dancing as the new Dr on Xmas day. Lots of love. Janet 💔🌟💜🙏
Thankyou Yasmin, such wisdom in your words and a reminder to be gentle with myself. x
Hope your break was full of kindness...
The new Doctor eps are a balm to my weary soul, for sure. Thank you for this, it resonates on so many levels 🫶🏼
It was so good! Hope you enjoyed!
