Thank you for this. The intelligent questions you posed in your article are important ones, as the minimalsation of 'minority groups' increases, in mainstream media.
Having you as a judge for the Stella was a great idea, a woman further marginalised by having come from Sudan, surely deepens the strength and importance of this prize in general, and you important part in regards to the Prize in particular.
Thank you, Carolyn! Yes, it’s been a real honour to judge to Stella - not least because it feels like I’m getting the chance to read some incredible aussie fiction, but also to discuss critically and deeply with fellow writers. A real gift.
I'm not sure how long I've been following your work across various platforms - probably right after you pivoted to being a creative full time after your time as an engineer and moving away from Australia. So it's been a while! But I want to say I really appreciate your work and more importantly having the courage to try new things out loud and in public. It has really given me the courage to try.
Oh, this is such a wonderful and generous note to receive, thank you so much Juhi!! I wish you all the best in trying new things, and grabbing life by the horns and living it to the fullest. Khair, inshallah!! Why not, eh? 🤩🥰
Your first footnote is such an interesting point about the intention required to generate that record, but also that there are good reasons why that information might not be front and centre or event present at all online. Makes me think differently about what is in the archive, especially in terms of internet content!
Ah, thanks for reading the footnotes! I feel like I really go off in them 🤣 but yea, it’s interesting to consider what and why things are - or are not - there, and it’s encouraging me to be a bit more intentional in recording… though never as intentionally as I intend to ;)
You are important Yass. You are Australia’s great loss X
