throwback to the early days of the amaliah book club

Hello, lovely readers.

Ramadan is less than two weeks away, and I am unprepared. The holy month comes around faster every year, subhanallah, and the feeling is always the same. Trepidation, anticipation, hope. We are never guaranteed another Ramadan.

In an effort to carve out some quiet space for myself while fasting and also make the most of this platform, I will be hosting FIVE GUEST WRITERS on this newsletter from the first weekend of March inshallah. So, if you’d like to write a piece for this Substack, please reply to this email with a short paragraph on what you’d like to write and why.

send me an email

Don’t overthink it, don’t think you’re not qualified enough, don’t stop yourself because of some unspecified fear that isn’t based in reality, just do it. I’d love to platform your work, and every guest writer will receive a 100 GBP fee (possible thanks to my lovely paying subscribers!)

send me that email!

I’m in the throes of editing a novel manuscript this week, so the links are a real mixed bag. Hope you find something you enjoy!

READ

  • A moving piece about the novel ‘Invisible Man’, and the current DEI backlash in the US, specifically in publishing. I will be honest with you here. I struggle reading such articles, although I am glad they are being written. You think you’re invisible now?! I feel myself wanting to shake the author by the shoulders. Try being Sudanese! At least you’re from the United States, even if you’re lowest on the totem pole, you’re still part of the globe’s ascendant empire! But then, I remind myself. This is not a competition. Pain is pain is pain. We are stronger together. We are not free until we are all free. Inshallah…
